The rolling hills of Crittenden County are home to Kentucky's largest Amish Community with a population of over five hundred. Cabinetry, furniture, baked goods and bulk foods as well as seasonal items such as plants, vegetables, pumpkins and gourds can be purchased from individual Amish families.
The largest Amish settlement is Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and adjacent counties followed by Holmes and adjoining counties in northeast Ohio, about 78 miles south of Cleveland.
Old Order Mennonites allow technology in the home, as well as the use of cell phones. In addition, Old Order Mennonites worship in meetinghouses. Amish people tend to avoid electricity, and almost every sect chooses to worship in the home instead of a meetinghouse.
While many Amish communities tend to be private and not get involved with anything government related, the Amish respect and consistently abide by tax laws that are appropriate to their communities. These taxes include but are not limited to sales, income, property, and public school taxes.

But before getting started, let us begin by stating that the Amish speak a language called Pennsylvania Dutch. It is considered to be their first and native language. The Amish learn to read, write and speak in English, allowing them to communicate with the 'outside world'.
Q: May outsiders join the Amish? A: Yes. Although the Amish do not actively evangelize, several dozen outside people have joined the Amish. Potential members must be willing to learn the dialect and accept the rules of the church in order to be baptized and become members of the church.
At the end of this period, Amish young adults are baptized into the church and usually marry, with marriage permitted only among church members.
